Find Allergy Relief With An Air Purifier

25th June 2009 by admin No Comments

If you have allergies, reducing your exposure to allergens is a good way to control your symptoms. If you have allergies to airborne allergens, then an allergy relief air purifier or a car air purifier may be a wise investment in your comfort. Since there are a lot of different brands of home air purifiers and a variety of models, you’ll want to compare your options to find one which will work well to tame your allergies.

The problem with some home air purifiers is the ozone they produce. Ozone is an unstable molecule that is a combination of three oxygen atoms. The instability of the molecule causes it to break into a more stable oxygen pair with the third oxygen atom being released as a free radical. The electrically charged oxygen atoms are very reactive and these reactions can be harmful to your health. These free radicals are extremely reactive and can cause lung damage and harm to other vital tissues in sufficient concentration; they have also been suggested to increase the risk of developing some cancers among other illnesses. If you have asthma, any air purifier that produces ozone should be avoided.

Generally, home air purifiers do not create enough ozone to be dangerous to your health, though. There may be an odor that you notice that is the result of some ozone in the air. The ozone created by home air purifiers bond with the chemical compounds you are trying to remove from the air and destroy them. There are also home air purifiers which use electrically charged metal plates instead of ozone to remove airborne particulates like pet dander, pollen and other materials. Fans move the air through the system with impurities being trapped by the charged metal plates. With these home air purifiers, you need to clean the metal plates weekly.

An allergy relief air purifier is not going to make your allergies go away but you will feel better. An air purifier will pull most of the pollen, smoke, dust and other particles which can trigger your allergies. You will need to use home air purifiers which are powerful enough for the space you want to use them in. For instance, you can get by with a small and inexpensive system for a 10 x 15’ space. However, if you want to clear the air in a larger room, you’ll need a bigger and more costly model.

A HEPA (High Efficiency Particulate Air) filter is a must-have item in home air purifiers. These filters can strain out around 97-98% of allergens from the air and keeps them from escaping, something which can happen with charged plate air purification systems. Some HEPA filters are washable and can be reused, though this is by no means always the case. These filters often last as long as the home air purifiers they are used with (3-10 years) while others need to be replaced every two or three years. The price of home air purifiers does not always have a lot to do with the quality of the filters.

The sound level of your home air purifier may also be important to you. A home air purifier which is of high quality should be so quiet that you can’t tell if it’s on by listening for it. The electricity used in some home air purifiers cause crackling and popping noises. Sometimes the fans in the home air purifiers are loud and can make it hard to hear the TV or to sleep. A good air filter in your HVAC system is a must; but if you really want to get your air clean and free of allergens, you’ll want to consider picking up home air purifiers for your home office, bedroom or any other room you spend a lot of your time in.
